What is PICC

What is PICC

A PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) is a type of catheter designed to offer a safe, reliable and comfortable intravenous access. Research shows that PICCs are much safer and have lower infection rates compared with other types of central venous catheters. From a legal perspective, PICCs protect against the many complications that can arise as a result of infiltrations and/or extravasations. From a patient’s perspective, they reduce the number of needle sticks required for IVs or lab draws and greatly increases patient satisfaction. PICCs are useful in most patients who are receiving IV therapy for more than 5 days, including those who are simply “difficult sticks”.
